Admission Criteria
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science.
- The equivalent of two years of full time industrial experience in pharmaceutical and related industries. Students with outstanding qualifications who do not have two years of industrial experience can be considered for admission if they have relevant summer internship or co-op experience.
- At least two years of college engineering mathematics (two of the following: Math 215, Math 216, Math 217 or equivalent) and basic statistics (Stat 265 or equivalent)
- Undergraduate coursework in the following areas: thermodynamics (ChE 330 or equivalent, reaction kinetics (ChE 344 or equivalent) and transport phenomena (ChE 341 or equivalent). Depending on which concentration they intend to pursue, the students without such background must take remedial courses before embarking on the degree program. (Courses shown in parenthesis indicate University of Michigan courses that typically cover the prerequisite material These chemical engineering course prerequisites may be satisfied by taking ChE 804/ChE 805 through Michigan State University prior to UM enrollment).
- The Graduate Record Examination (GRE, general portion) is highly recommended but not required.
- A one-page statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, and official undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) transcripts are required.
- Additional requirements by concentration follow (students without this background will be required to take additional coursework in these areas before embarking on the degree program):
- Pharmaceutical Development Science: Undergraduate coursework in thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, and transport phenomena.
- Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Science: Undergraduate coursework in thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, and transport phenomena.
- E-Clinical Science: Undergraduate coursework in human physiology, statistics, and matrix algebra (Math 217 or equivalent).
- Regulatory Science: human physiology, statistics, and technical communications.
Applicant GPA's range between 3.5–4.0.
Current U-M Undergraduates
U-M Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Science undergraduates with a GPA of 3.5 and above are encouraged to apply. Engineering students should apply beginning the second semester of their junior year. (Students who do not meet the prerequisites may apply but will not be considered as SGUS students (see below).
Interested students may submit an application to the Pharmaceutical Admissions Committee. U-M undergraduates are not required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). If a Chemical or Biomedical Engineering student who meets the GPA and prerequisites is accepted into the program, they enroll as a College of Engineering Five-Year Sequential Graduate/Undergraduate Studies (SGUS) student in the term following acceptance. Students from Pharmaceutical Science and related science fields may be accepted prior to meeting all prerequisites, if approved by the Admissions Committee. These students will be admitted conditionally and will be required to take several undergraduate math, statistics, and engineering courses before embarking on this program.
The Application Process
To apply to the program, review the admissions criteria to make sure that you are eligible to apply. Request or download an application, complete all necessary paperwork, and turn into the office by the appropriate deadline. If you have questions about any of the items, contact pharmeng@umich.edu and someone will assist you.
